The University and College Union (UCU) was formed by the 2006 merger of the Association of University Teachers (AUT) and the National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education (NATFHE). It represents over 120,000 academics and support staff.

Durham UCU (DUCU) represents and negotiates on behalf of academic and related staff at all stages of their careers and on all types of employment contract. Membership is open to all staff from grades 1 to 10.

Locally, DUCU negotiates with the University at regular meetings of the Joint Consultative and Negotiating Committee and is represented on a number of other University committees.

UCU works to improve pay and conditions for academic and related staff in higher education. The more members we have, the stronger our voice is.

Personal cases are some of our most important work. Members can contact DUCU if they have encountered a problem at work and believe they need representation or support.

Things you might need help with include

  • contractual status
  • grievance & disciplinary matters
  • harassment
  • changes to contracts
  • redundancy
  • changes to HERA grading
  • maternity rights

DUCU’s Personal Cases Co-ordinator reports to the Committee. They are assisted by other DUCU Reps who represent members and can accompany you to meetings with management.
