Redundancies are a choice, not a necessity!

The below leaflet has been developed by members, focusing on management agency in staff costs and encouraging colleagues to join a union and participate in action for a fighting chance to save jobs and protect workloads.

Any Durham University staff member or postgraduate researcher can join UCU. If they are interested in the union’s value beyond the current circumstances, you may also find it useful to share other recruitment fliers aimed at different groups of workers UCU represents.

Joining a union and taking collective action is the best and only hope to protect jobs and workloads, and to win the best possible outcomes for staff collectively and individually. The more members taking action, the more likely we are to succeed.

You are encouraged to share this leaflet with colleagues, put it up on noticeboards, and contact president@durhamucu.org.uk to help with distributing printed copies.

Flier with the following text in sections:

"REDUNDANCIES AT DURHAM ARE A CHOICE
NOT A NECESSITY

JOIN UCU, PROTECT JOBS, PROTECT WORKLOADS

Senior management are choosing to cut £20M in staff costs by 2026. That could mean more than 200 jobs by August, with more next year. But staff cuts are not inevitable. They are a decision.

Management have options, but instead of challenging wasteful spending elsewhere, they are targeting the staff who keep our university running.

If this year’s cuts go ahead, we expect everyone’s workloads will soar, staff morale will collapse, and even more job losses will follow.

Don’t accept their choices.
Make yours.
Join the union.
Stand up for your job, your colleagues, and the future of OUR UNIVERSITY.

Durham UCU is balloting for industrial action!

Any member of staff can join UCU, no matter your job type or where you work. Scan the QR code!"
